ASAP Starts Monday...
September 8, 2010
Dear Parents,
On September 13, in addition to the regular classroom activities and instruction, we will be holding an after school, four-day academic support program—ASAP (After School Academics for Progress)—from 3:15 to 4:00 in the middle school. Staffed and monitored by middle and high school teachers, the goal of ASAP is to provide homework assistance, study sessions, and a quiet place to work.
It is our goal that every student in the middle school completes every assignment a teacher gives. ASAP not only offers the opportunity for help with homework, but it also promotes student accountability through Teacher ASAP Referrals.
Students missing assignments quickly begin to fall into a decline in performance. If a student does not complete and turn in an assignment within the due dates set by a teacher, that teacher can refer that student to ASAP to complete the missing or incomplete assignment. Every assignment is important, and every assignment promotes growth.
ASAP provides the opportunity for every student to succeed by seeking and receiving assistance, and by increasing student accountability.
If you have any questions regarding the ASAP program, please contact the school at 570-323-9439 or by email to rgaetano@loyalsocklancers.org.
Sincerely,
Robert J. Gaetano, Principal

As a parent, I understand that the ASAP program is available for my son/daughter for homework assistance or for missing homework completion upon teacher referral. I also understand that I am to make arrangements for transportation home at the 4:00 conclusion of ASAP on the day(s) in which my child is assigned.

September Middle School Report (9-8-10)
· Overview
-We are very pleased about a successful greeting to the 2010-11 school year! Class meetings were held at each grade level and a new program of Character Education was introduced. All teachers are providing insights to positive character building. The school-wide initiative models the nationally-recognized “Character Counts” program.
· What’s happening in the classroom?
-On Monday, September 13th the Middle School will restart ASAP- After School Academics for Progress. Teachers will be providing academic support from 3:15 until 4:00 Monday through Thursday. The program will be available to every Middle School student, and while it is a voluntary program, there is a teacher referral process and we will be recruiting the “at-risk” students.
-4-Sight Testing is underway and teachers will be meeting one period during the six-day cycle to assess the data, as well as look at multiple forms of data to help guide and individualize instruction.
· Enrichment
-Special Agent LaCadre of the Attorney General’s Office will present his informative and enlightening program on Cyber-bullying, sexting and inappropriate texting to the sixth grade students on September 21st.
-Mr. Eric Gee, our Director of Technology, will be teaming up with Mrs. Heather Pipech, Computer Concepts Instructor, to provide a similar presentation to our 7th and 8th grade students on September 29th.
· School Community Relations
-In recognition of 9-11 students and staff will be wearing red, white and blue to school tomorrow.
-On Friday they will be wearing school colors and also “cheek cheers” compliments of the PTO. On Friday afternoon at 2 we will have our first pep rally with fall sports participants being introduced by their respective coaches, the band playing and the cheerleaders cheering! We will conclude the rally with the traditional battle between the sixth, seventh and eighth grades for ownership of the spirit stick.
-Please check our website and the middle school blog often. In addition to reports and photographs of middle school events, we have also added a calendar, specific to our daily and monthly activities.
· Staff/Personnel
-There are many new faces in the worlds of the Loyalsock Township Middle School students this year. Mrs. Linda LaCoe, high school mathematics teacher, is now sharing her expertise with our sixth graders enrolled in pre-algebra. Mrs. Shelia Riggs, our ESL Specialist, is teaching two sections of 6th grade social studies, while another section is being taught by Mr. Justin VanFleet, also a high school teacher. We are also offering Computer Concepts and Technology Solutions to our sixth graders this year, with Mrs. Heather Pipech, another high school teacher at the helm. Thank you to Dr. Matt Reitz and Mrs. Chris Herman for helping to orchestrate these arrangements of shared staff. Our new staff members Ms. Emily Bryan, mathematics and Ms. Ashley Argenta, Fine Arts, have also gotten off to a great start!
· Kudos
-This month I would like to recognize several staff members. It was difficult choosing since the entire staff really “pitched in” to assure a smooth start to the school year.
-Mrs. Kate Preisch, our Middle School Counselor, did an outstanding job, configuring and re-configuring schedules. Scheduling is always challenging and we are running smoothly thanks to her efforts. Also thanks to Mrs. Robin Enderle and Mrs. Michelle Bartley for assisting with the scheduling process.
-Hats off to Mrs. Preisch and Mr. Matt Johnson, our 7th grade reading teacher and administrative intern, for tonight’s presentation on Transition and Character Education.
-Additionally, I would like to mention the volunteer work of Craig Weaver, who has served 12 years as a leader for the Little Leaguers at the World Series.
