Middle School Board Report 10-27-10

-CLASSROOMS
It’s hard to believe we are looking at November already and we are happy that things are running very smoothly at the middle school. This is a result of the hard work of our teachers, staff and students. There have been many changes this year and we could not have embraced it without teamwork. Our second round of 4-Sight testing started today and in addition to teachers accessing the data, we are in the process of forming a data team to look closer at multiple measures of data to help us improve our “targeted instruction” period.

-ENRICHMENT
Red Ribbon Week kicked off this week, and is a true indication of Loyalsock’s commitment to drug and alcohol prevention. Ms. Denise Scott from Cross Roads Counseling addressed students on saying “no” to alcohol and drugs. Students and staff are continuing to model the pillars of our Character Education program and there are daily contests, as well as prizes for supporting the theme. The high school students from SADD also provided a presentation to the 7th and 8th graders.
Also- kudos to Mrs. Herman for last night’s Career Expo and thanks once again for involving the middle school students as ambassadors.

-ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Last year we instituted an After School Academic Program (ASAP) and this year we are offering before school help, beginning at 7:30 AM in Mr. Johnson’s room.

-FIELD TRIPS
The 8th graders went to Camp Susque this month for host of activities. They participated in leadership activities, team building. The low ropes course, the rope swing, a nature survival walk and even had a campfire to cook s’mores.

-SPORTS
The middle school athletes have enjoyed a productive fall season. The girls posted a fine 9-5 record in softball, while the football team is undefeated at 7-0, with two games remaining. The girls are now preparing for the upcoming basketball season with 22 seventh and eighth graders on the team. The boys will get started in basketball and wrestling November 19th.

-CLUBS
The “Energy Patrol” is up and running at LTMS, under the direction of 7th Grade Science Teacher Mrs. Rogers. There is a team of 7th graders who are on the Energy Management Team, which is encouraging students and staff to: turn off the lights, turn off the faucets, close the doors, reuse and recycle. They are setting their sights at not only saving energy, but also money.
