HISTORICAL THINKERS AT LOYALSOCK NATIONAL HISTORY DAY EVENT
On the evening of February 9 Mrs. Joy Walls’ Middle School Social Studies students presented their National History Day exhibits to their parents and a judging panel. National History Day is a program that brings history alive through a rigorous academic process based on involving students in historical research. It engages students in the process of discovery and interpretations of historical topics. Students produce imaginative exhibits based on research related to this year’s theme of “Debate and Diplomacy in History: Success, Failures and Consequences.”
These sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students went beyond the facts presented in their textbooks and examined the historical records themselves consulting primary source documents imaginatively. Projects were evaluated at this local level with top ranked ones advancing to the regional level on March 19.
Some topics the students researched included: The Cuban Missile Crisis, Dropping the Atomic Bomb, Segregation, Food and Drug Act of 1906, Indian fishing rights, Child Obesity, Women’s Rights, Indian Boarding Schools, Civil Rights Movement, Book Banning, and Scopes Evolution Trial.
As a result of the evening of sharing their projects the students gained confidence in front of their peers, articulated what they know about their projects and practiced their communication skills in preparation for the regional History day contest. The students and their families enjoyed the evening sharing and learning more about history.

New Computer System

Parents were recently afforded the opportunity to get an in-depth look at how the new computer system at Loyalsock Township Middle School can be helpful in the partnership of education.Last week parents received "back-pack mail" explaining how to access the important information to monitor progress of their children. The Parent Portal will be updated by teachers at a minimum of once per week, in an effort to keep parents informed. If there are any questions about setting up the account please contact our Director of Technology Mr. Eric Gee at 323-9439 (ext. 1217). Questions regarding grades, homework, assessments, etc. should be directed to the teacher. Pictured: Mr. Gee explains the Parent Portal to Mrs. Lori Beiter.
