Loyalsock Township Middle School Board Report

September
Opening Days- Although it is hard to believe that October is knocking at the door, we have been very pleased with the first month of school. We were especially proud of the kick-off ceremonies. Kudos to the entire maintenance staff, secretarial staff and teachers for making the beginning of the 2011-12 school year such a positive experience.
Open House – Back-to-School Night was postponed due to the flooding. It will be replaced by an Open House, which will be held on Tuesday, November 15th. This event will be held in conjunction with American Education Week.
Curriculum- Ms. Rebecca Leid invites anyone interested, to attend a geography museum, provided by the seventh grade students on Friday, September 30th from 10:15-10:45am in the Middle School Lobby. Students are working with a partner and have chosen a Spanish-speaking country to research. They are required to make a poster highlighting six topics of interest from that country, as well as prepare a hands-on activity/side effect (music, food, etc.). While this is going on, they will be working on a scavenger hunt to figure out facts from other countries.
Pep Rally/Dance- The Fall Pep Rally was held last Friday and the sixth graders won the spirit stick! The Lancer band also performed and the Fall Coaches introduced their teams. Students enjoyed a dance/game night, which was sponsored by the PTO on Friday night with 185 students in attendance.
Homecoming Pep Rally- Loyalsock High School will be celebrating Homecoming 2011 next week. To raise awareness of this event, the middle school students are asked to wear school colors on Friday. There will also be a short pep assembly on Friday with the 7th and 8th grade band performing, as well as the high school team captains being introduced by our Athletic Director Mr. Ron Insinger.
Field Trips –
• 8th graders will be attending Camp Susque for Team Building activities and nature-related instruction in Mid-October.
Community Relations- The Book Fair is currently being held in the LTMS/HS Library. Mrs. Myers urges everyone to stop by and shop. She would also like everyone to know there is a donation box in the library to help the Danville Middle School Library recover from the recent flood. Any “gently used” books may also be donated to this cause. Also, our school students and staffs have joined forces to help flood victims in our school, as well as county wide. We will also have a dress down day to purchase a gift card for a family in need.
Students of the Month – A new addition at the middle school will be to recognize a boy and girl every month that exhibit good citizenship and academic achievement. The members of each team will select the students and they will be rewarded with a gift from the Lancer store, compliments of the PTO, as well as their pictures published on the middle school blog and in the local newspapers.
Fall Sports – Football and softball are off to great starts and I encourage everyone to check out a game or more. I have had the opportunity and have witnessed first-hand, enthusiasm with a capital “E.” I have also attended a few practices and must admit I admire the coaches of the middle school sports for their patience.
ROCK- Loyalsock Township Middle School's students, faculty, and staff will be Respectful, Optimistic, Committed, and Kind! These attributes are being practiced and reinforced every day, as well as the continuation of our Character Education Program which is incorporated into daily lessons.

New IPADs A Hit!

The Cay, Setting and Background Knowledge
Building Activity:
Students used Google Earth on the ipads to go on a scavenger hunt in the Caribbean Islands. They looked for several places that are in the novel and were able to zoom in and view the architecture of houses, oil refineries, bridges, and bodies of water. Once they found each place or item, they had to write about how it relates to the novel and importance to the novel.

What is Tubesock?

The Sixth Grade class is enjoying an exciting new class at Loyalsock Township Middle School( LTMS). They are currently collecting research on the events and news around LTMS. It is like a min-television news production and Mr. Lorson, their teacher, is instructing the students on the various stages of gathering newsworthy items, writing the script and then producing the program.  Once the students gather the information, they join together with the class to create a screenplay for the Tubesock show. During class, they plan, film , and produce a 2-5 minute television broadcast. After the show is complete they evaluate and critique the show based upon their current level of Video Production. The show outline consists of Events coming to the Middle school, Inspirational Quotes, Facts about this day in History, and Trends that are happening in the world. Students write the script, including commentary and their own style.
Students are assigned a research assignment for homework, and are expected to come to class and compile the research in the form of a typed screenplay. Once a screenplay is created, Students move to the production facility where the show is filmed and edited live. If students are successful with all facets of the show including: researched homework, screenplay production and filming, as well as exhibit a cooperative work ethic, they will have the chance to have their show placed on the LTMS website.
